At Anna Julia Cooper School, we are committed to nurturing students academically, emotionally, and socially. Because a high-quality education looks different for every child, we offer extra support in a lot of different ways.
Support Services at Anna Julia Cooper School
Support services are readily available, free of charge, and offered during school. Teachers and specialists collaborate to better understand needs, determine underlying causes, and empower students with effective strategies to build resilience and overcome challenges.
Daily breakfast, snacks, and lunch
We provide two healthy meals and snacks each day to all students.
Reading and Math Intervention
Our academic intervention program, including Title I services, offers targeted instruction to help students acheive grade-level math and reading skills before they move on to high school.
Teacher Aids
Lower school (K-5) teacher aids support lead teachers during classroom lessons and activities – guiding, encouraging, and uplifting our lower school students on a daily basis.

Tutoring
Through our robust volunteer tutoring program, middle school students receive academic support in one-on-one or small group settings. Tutors focus on building reading and math skills, confidence, and positive relationships. Students ‘opt-in’ for tutoring during daily study hall.
Speech Therapy
Speech and Language Therapy is offered through our licensed partners at TALK Therapy Services. All lower school students are screened upon enrollment. Weekly/bi-weekly services are individualized and offered to students with the greatest needs. The overall goal is to improve students’ communication skills and functional independence.
Early Childhood Literacy
Our Early Childhood Literacy program is provided by our highly specialized partners at READ Therapy Services, with a strategic focus on literacy among struggling readers in kindergarten through second grade. READ also supports students with identified reading disabilities in grades 3-8, providing targeted, one-on-one and small group interventions to meet their specific learning needs.
Your financial support allows us to provide these critical services for our highest need students.
