Here at AJC, your child will be loved, challenged, and supported as they grow into their full potential. We are a family, and we invite you to join us.

Admissions Criteria

In keeping with our mission, admission decisions are based heavily on these criteria:

  • Low-income eligibility requirements
  • Residency in the East End/Church Hill area
  • Sibling(s) of a child already admitted to the School
  • Whether the School believes it will be able to serve the student well
  • A percentage of students from RRHA/Section 8 Housing
  • Kindergarten applicants must be age 5 by October 1st

Full-Tuition Scholarships

All students receive full-tuition scholarships valued at $21,500 per year.

2026-2027 Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

Anna Julia Cooper School serves families whose pre-tax annual income does not exceed approximately 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. Please use the chart below to see if your family size and income meet this criteria. (When counting ‘Persons in Family Unit’ you may include any child or adult living in your home.)

If you meet the income requirements above and live in the Church Hill or East End area, we invite you to begin the application process. 

How to Apply

Step 1: Review income guidelines

Confirm income eligibility using the table above.

Step 2: Submit an application

Apply online November – March.

Apply in person for waitlist April – October.

Step 3: Submit all financial income

Submit your financial documents (1040 tax return, SNAP/TANF, SSI, Child Support) to admissions@ajcschool.com or bring copies to the school.

Step 4: Interview

If you meet our Admission Criteria, and have submitted all financial income information, you will be contacted to schedule an interview.

Step 5: Admissions Decision

Admissions decisions are made in April. Families are notified of acceptance or waiting list status via mail and e-mail.
