Thank you for your interest in Anna Julia Cooper School. AJC is a private faith-based school that helps uplift students and graduates to change the trajectory of their lives, setting their sights on success in high school, college, and serving their communities.  We welcome students and families from all religious faiths, racial and cultural backgrounds and family structures.

Through the generosity of many, all students at Anna Julia Cooper receive a full tuition scholarship, valued at $17,000 per academic year. This scholarship is automatically renewed for each student at the beginning of the academic year in which the student is enrolled and in good standing. This scholarship also covers the cost of athletic equipment, clubs, groups and activities, field-trips, meals and snacks, books and the majority of school supplies for the entire year. Parents are asked to pay a $50 enrollment fee for first time students, or a re-enrollment fee of $50 for returning students.  Parents are also asked to pay for uniform shirts (order forms are provided by the school and will be discussed upon offer of admission).

In keeping with our mission, admission decisions are based heavily on these three criteria:

  • Low-income eligibility requirements,
  • Siblings of a child already admitted to the School; and
  • Residency in the East End area.

In addition, the following factors may play a role in the offer of admission to a student:

  • Size of class
  • Gender balance of class
  • Family commitment
  • Whether the School believes it will be able to serve the student well
  • Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) affiliation

Only completed applications will be reviewed for consideration and this will be done on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the year; however, the best months to begin the application process for the following school year are November through February.  Most admissions decisions have concluded in April with award letters being distributed to families in May.
