Admissions

Anna Julia Cooper School is a private, faith-based school whose mission is to Love, Educate, and Uplift students and graduates so they may realize their God-given gifts. We welcome students and families from all religious faiths, racial and cultural backgrounds, and family structures.

Through the generosity of many, all students at Anna Julia Cooper School receive a full-tuition scholarship valued at $17,500 per academic year.

Admission Criteria

In keeping with our mission, admission decisions are based heavily on these criteria:

  •       Low-income eligibility requirements
  •       Residency in the Church Hill/East End area
  •       Sibling(s) of a child already admitted to the School
  •       The balance of a particular class
  •       Whether the School believes it will be able to serve the student well
  •       A large percentage of students from RRHA/Section 8 Housing

Application Process

Step 1

Submit an application

Only completed applications, which include income verification information, will be considered.

Step 2

Interview

When your file is complete, you will be contacted to schedule an interview.

Step 3

Admissions Decisions

We make decisions on a rolling basis during our admissions period through May. Families that have submitted completed applications will be notified by phone and mail.

Only completed applications will be reviewed for consideration and this will be done on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the year; however, the best months to begin the application process for the following school year are November through February.  Most admissions decisions have concluded in April with award letters being distributed to families in May.  Accepted students pay a $100 family fee made payable to the Anna Julia Cooper School (Cash, check, or money order preferred).  Order forms for uniform shirts are made available upon payment of the family fee.
