Happy Fall from all of us at AJC! During this season of gratitude, we reflect on the people who make our school thrive. Our families, teachers and staff, volunteers, financial supporters, and community partners—you power everything we do. Thank you for being part of this journey with us, and for all the ways you show up to love, educate, and uplift the children of Richmond's East End. |

Every Family, Every Student, Every Year |
|
|
If you’re a longtime reader of the AJC Newsletter, you know that each year we’re proud to partner with families to achieve 100% participation in student-parent-teacher conferences. These meetings begin with students sharing their strengths, new skills, areas for growth, and personal goals before teachers and parents join the conversation. More than a routine check-in, these are sacred days at AJC—our close relationships with families are integral to their students’ success.

Beyond the Bell
It’s no secret that AJC teachers and staff pour their hearts into their work every day—but did you know many also extend the school day to provide after-school programs? From sports to academic clubs, each offering gives students extra time to explore new interests and deepen their connection with one another.
A new standout this year is the Montessori Math Club, led by Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Robinson. Meeting for two hours after school twice a week, the club has grown to sixteen eager mathematicians-in-the-making. Through curiosity and play students are building early connections to math concepts, and having fun while they're at it. |

Meet The Teacher: Scout Boynton |
|
|
|
After earning her Master’s in Teaching at VCU in 2021, Scout Boynton was eager to bring her passion for history and language to the classroom. She spent four years teaching history at Petersburg High School before joining AJC as our 6th-grade English and History teacher. “Ms. Boynton is a good teacher because she always makes sure we’ve got it before she moves on,” shared sixth grader Jaceon, summing up the care and energy she brings to each lesson.
Below, Ms. Boynton shares what inspired her to become a teacher, what drew her to AJC, and a little about her teaching style. |
|
|
What inspired you to become a teacher?
The reason I became a teacher is a combination of two things. First, I had a few really awesome teachers myself who made a big impact on me, so I was inspired by them. And second, I took a few classes in college that really opened my eyes to how crucial a solid education is in terms of giving kids control and choice regarding their future. So combining those things, I thought if I could even play a small part helping kids feel like they belong in school and open doors for themselves, that would be really cool.
What drew you to AJC?
When I first visited AJC I was so impressed by the way the school not only holds students to high expectations that set them up for academic success, but also so clearly loves all the kids who go here. I feel like AJC is a really special place that is truly committed to providing every student a really strong school experience, and I feel really really lucky to get to be a part of it! What's your teaching style?
I like to think my teaching style is one of mutual respect. I come into the classroom with the aim to show every student that I believe in them and will give them my unwavering support and effort if they give me theirs. If we can reciprocate this respect, effort, and love to each other, then I think we're in a really good place to learn. |

|
Ms. Boynton’s classroom is engaging and full of opportunities to speak up and build confidence. |

On a recent field trip to the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, first grade students tried their hand at a playful weaving project. The visit was inspired by VisArts’ recent “Interwoven” exhibition, where 14 artists explored weaving in imaginative ways. We’re grateful for our 12-year partnership with VisArts, which includes Make Space—an after-school art and mentoring workshop for our sixth grade girls—and for the creative inspiration and expression they continue to bring to our students.

The mission of the Visual Arts Center of Richmond is to celebrate and support the creative life of all people through art-making, exhibitions, and community programs. |

This Fall, 2018 graduate Hakeem Harris returned to campus as an assistant football coach intern. Hakeem is completing his degree in Sports Management at Old Dominion University and will graduate this December.
As a student, Hakeem was known for his easygoing, laid-back nature. He spent countless hours with his history teacher and soccer coach, Mr. Keiper—building a mentorship that left a lasting mark. Now he's mentoring our student-athletes, including 7th grader Ayden, who earned the role of starting snapper under Hakeem’s guidance. We’re thrilled to see Hakeem bring his patience and passion for the game back home to AJC. Once a Lion, always a Lion!

Every once in a while, a shout out from a grad stops us in our tracks. Recently, one of our alumni shared a post on Facebook thanking us for “15 years of love and support.” His words are a powerful reminder of why we do what we do—and of the lasting impact of a community built on love, trust, and belonging. A heartfelt thank-you to our Grad Support Team, TeShawn Cunningham and Markaya James, and dedicated teachers who continue to walk alongside our alumni wherever life takes them—no judgment, just love. |

Last Wednesday’s Staff vs. Student Volleyball Game was a hit, with a full lineup of staff hopping in to play. The Montessori Math Club even stopped by to keep score—using bar graphs, of course. Staff was all smiles after their victory.

Thanks to diverse rotation of enrichment opportunities at AJC, our students are always willing to try something new—like Legos Robotics class, which can be as relaxing as it is rewarding. This year, students have taken on intricate
flower Lego kits and rotated through weekly challenges in class: a robot arm that can pick up objects, a vehicle programmed to navigate obstacles, even a
programmable safe. At AJC, opportunity is everything—try it, and you just might discover your next favorite thing! |
