MARCH 2024 NEWSLETTER

Each year National Read Across America Day is celebrated in schools on March 2nd, Dr. Seuss' birthday. Here at AJC, Lower School students participated in our first-ever Read Across America Week organized by our awesome 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Fritz. Parents surprised students as mystery readers, reading buddies teamed up, and a high-stakes reading challenge made for a fun week!

As with any good reading challenge, it came with an exciting prize: Lower School Principal Mr. Crane bravely agreed to a "pie in the face" for every 100 books read. With 222 books logged by the end of the week, he knew he was in for it!

We hope events like our Lower School Read Across America Week and our Middle School Read Hard Play Hard help students discover the simple joy that can be found in a book.

The gentlemen of AJC showed up big for their girls during our 2nd Annual Father-Daughter Dance! AJC's "Sneaker Ball" is hands-down the most heartwarming event of the year! Love and pride were palpable as families arrived dressed to the nines. It was a beautiful thing!

Maasai People of Kenya Visit

Representatives of the Maasai People, Chief Joseph, Cicilia, and John, stopped by AJC during an educational tour of the United States. How lucky are we?!

Through story-telling, song, and art, they shared their customs and culture with middle school students. The people of the Maasai rely heavily on their natural surroundings for medicinal purposes and therefore deeply respect the environment.

Several kids participated in the presentation by donning traditional clothing while the rest of the class clapped to the beat of a beautiful tribal song. It was a pretty incredible start to the day!

MAKING LIFE BETTER FOR NEIGHBORS

Through AJC's "Voices" elective class, students reflect on their community, while also thinking about ways to make life better for their neighbors. The 6th graders pictured here were interested in learning more about food and food insecurity, so with the help of their teacher, Ms. Johnson, they reached out to Taylor Scott at RVA Community Fridges.

With Taylor's input, they enthusiastically assembled and decorated over 100 snack bags for kids and delivered them to the free RVA Community Fridges here in Church Hill.

Meet Naiim Byrd!

Naiim, AJC Class of 2022, is a sophomore at The Steward School and takes part in UPRVA's excellent after-school program. A member of Steward's Leadership Program, he applied for this selective opportunity because he "wants to elevate his leadership skills, make connections, and improve his communication skills." He added, "and it'll be good for my college resume." Smart, Naiim!

The Leadership Program at Steward is a diploma endorsement opportunity that combines hands-on learning with academic studies. Through this program, Naiim is working with Southside ReLeaf in their effort to tackle environmental injustice.

Naiim recently completed a Steward School "Minimester Week"  at Thompson, Siegel & Walmsley, where he learned about job opportunities in the business and financial fields. He is loving his high school experience, sharing, "Steward is a great place and fits me perfectly."

Naiim is a true go-getter and we can't wait to see where the next few years take him!
