A Note from the Head of School

One of the blessings of the pandemic is a heightened awareness of our interdependence.  We are always, and extraordinarily, bound together and dependent on each other.  Before COVID it was easier to miss, forget or sidestep that truth.  Think of the hundreds (thousands?) of people who make it possible for us to buy groceries each week. At the beginning of the school year I mused aloud to staff that if Jesus stopped by today and was asked what the two greatest commandments were he might say “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength---and wear a mask.”  The act of wearing a mask is a very intimate, inconvenient, yet essential way of caring for ourselves and our neighbor, while we hope our neighbor does the same  There could scarcely be a more concrete symbol of our mutual well-being, how much we depend on each other. There are a thousand other such acts, with or without COVID, that are always here for us to choose.
A favorite of mine are our just completed and semi-annual parent-student-teacher conferences.  They are holy days for me and always moving. 100% attendance again.  Parents are our students’ primary teachers.  We depend on them and they on us.  We need to sit down with them, we want and need them here, to tie us more closely together and advance their child’s chances of growing. (And we’ll pick them up and get them here and back if they need a ride because that’s how we roll.) Their presence inspires us to work harder.  I hope our efforts with and for their children inspire them to hang in there. We’re counting on and depending on each other.  We’re in it together or not at all.

Volunteer Spotlight

Meet Tanisha Moyer! She is the mother of 7th grader, Matthias. She and her husband, Rob, are both active parent volunteers. This school year, Tanisha is the Chair of the AJC Parents' Association AND an AJC Board Member.

Why did you accept the invitation to be the Parents' Association Chair?

It was solely based on my personal experience with the group last year. Being able to convey important information to parents from teachers and staff is extremely important and sometimes our babies don't understand how important it is and will not provide that information. And to work with the parents and relay their thoughts and feelings to the Parents' Association is just as important and I wanted to be a part of that process.

How have you seen AJC grow and strengthen its "community of affection" over the years?

Over the last few years I've personally witnessed the growth that AJC has with the community. For the last two years at the fish fry I've seen more families from the larger community come out to support our AJC family. The community has opened their arms to AJC and so have we.

What are your goals for the Parents' Association this year?

My goal this year is to reach out to every parent to express the urgency of their voice. The Parents' Association at AJC is not your normal PTA that's held at other schools. The leadership truly cares and truly wants to hear the thoughts and opinions of the parents. Without our parents, there wouldn't be any students, and without the students, there is no AJC.

Is there anything you wish more people knew about AJC?

I wish many people knew the love and dedication that our Parents' Assocation, teachers, and staff pour into our babies everyday.  We all may notice the front line action on a day-to-day basis. But to witness the behind the scenes work they put in would amaze a lot of people. That's another reason why I've chosen to be a part of this great Association. I've seen it first hand.
