The 3rd Annual Wallace Day of Giving at AJC was a success!
On April 17, 2024, we honored Gordon Wallace (a founding AJC board member who passed away in May 2021) with a special day of remembrance, service, and support for the Gordon W. Wallace, Jr. Memorial Endowment Fund. Our students dedicated the day to honoring Gordon’s memory by giving back to the community in meaningful ways. The 6th and 7th graders crafted cards and artwork to bring joy to the residents in memory care at Westminster Canterbury, while the 4th and 8th graders potted flowers and created Spring-themed cards for our neighbors, inviting them to join us for the Spring Bash. A special chapel service was held to honor Gordon and his family, recognizing his profound impact on our community. The service ended with the prayer Gordon wrote shortly before his passing.

Lord, make us thankful for these and all our many blessings: Thank you for Love, that we can accept each other; for Strength,
that we can help each other; for Wisdom, that we can understand each other; or Faith, that we can hang in there until things get better. Amen. |

8th Grade Dance
Last weekend, we hosted our 9th annual Eighth Grade Dance, a special tradition kickstarted by the parents of AJC’s Class of 2015. Our eighth graders got to enjoy a memorable night of dancing and fun as they near graduation! This year's theme was "A Night in Paris: The City of Lights." It was a resounding success, fostering unity, joy, and unforgettable memories as our students bid farewell to their middle school years. Special thanks to all those involved in the planning and execution of a wonderful night for our soon-to-be AJC grads!

| Meet Naomi!
Steward School Senior and AJC Class of 2020 Graduate, Naomi, has been accepted to many colleges, and after several campus visits through our partner non-profit UPRVA, she selected Radford University as her next step. A recipient of the Radford Tuition Promise, she will receive a full-tuition scholarship to attend.
This past summer, Naomi was one of 18 students from schools across the Richmond region to participate in the annual Cochrane Summer Economic Institute (CSEI) program at Collegiate School. CSEI provides opportunities for students to apply knowledge of economics and use entrepreneurial skills and mindsets while engaging in design thinking to re-imagine to better understand the real-world challenges confronted when attracting businesses to and operating businesses in Richmond.
Naomi is as kind a person as she is a talented artist. She has a bright future ahead! Congratulations, Naomi! |

6th Graders Exploring Richmond's History
6th grade English students conducted research drawn from local sources to answer questions about why the history of places matter, how to live with financial responsibility, and what role art plays in our lives.
First, students interviewed a person of an older generation about their own experiences and ideas. Then they analyzed an article about a significant institution in Richmond, based on their focus area. Examples of places students researched include: Armstrong High School, Maggie Walker's St. Luke Penny Bank, and the VMFA and its new statue "Rumors of War."
After the heavy lifting of conducting their research, the students gathered their evidence, took a stance with their thesis statements, and used the writing process to craft organized, coherent, evidence-based research papers. Way to go, sixth graders! |

In 1914, at the age of 56, Anna Julia Cooper began her doctoral studies at Columbia University. The following year, her studies were interrupted when she chose to adopt her late half-brother's five children upon their mother's death.
Over the next decade, while raising and educating her five adopted children, she composed her doctoral dissertation, completing her coursework in 1924. Cooper defended her thesis, "The Attitude of France on the Question of Slavery," at The Sorbonne in Paris — entirely in French. |

Check out our new Lower School playground equipment! |
AJC recently received support for several items from our 'grounds' wishlist. From landscaping stone (to eliminate the cost of mulching) to playground equipment to walkie-talkies (to improve dismissal safety) -- we are so grateful for this generosity! |

On Monday, April 8th, Richmond, VA experienced a partial eclipse. Our students and staff witnessed this unique event right here on the AJC campus. What a great educational experience to share as a community.
Special thanks to the Dean/Green family for providing eclipse glasses for our students and staff so we could safely view the eclipse! |

Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up! |
|
|
We are thankful to have such wonderful and hardworking teachers here at AJC! In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week (May 6-10), the principals are planning fun ways to celebrate. Mr. Crane has baseball-themed plans for the Lower School teachers, while in the Middle School, Mrs. Gilliam is planning to transform the teachers’ lounge into a carnival. There will also be a cookout for the teachers, as well as a gift card raffle. If you would like to show your appreciation for our teachers, please consider donating items from our Amazon Wishlist (linked below).
