OCTOBER 2024 NEWSLETTER

As the new school year unfolds, it’s inspiring to see how seamlessly our wrap-around partnerships fall back into place, thanks to the financial support of local foundations and individual donors. Each year, it feels almost like a small miracle as the greater Richmond community continues to step up for AJC. With the support of incredible organizations like UPRVA, Art for the Journey, Swim RVA, Talk and Read Therapy, Richmond Cycling Corps, Maymont Foundation, and NextUp RVA (just to name a few), we’re able to provide our students with so much more than a strong academic foundation. Like a patchwork quilt stitched together by the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, the impact is far greater than the sum of its parts. Stay tuned in the coming months as we highlight the work of our amazing partners!

DONUTS AND GROWNUPS

Families gathered in the gym for our favorite breakfast event of the year: Donuts and Grownups! This year, we gathered both the Lower and Middle School in the gym for one big, sweet celebration. Several 8th graders helped run the show by escorting our youngest students across the street to the gym, serving breakfast, and even pitching to clean up! When everyone’s bellies were full, we jumped into Morning Meet. It happened to be Trivia Tuesday, so students and their parents worked together to answer some donut related questions. Can you guess which country consumes the most donuts per capita per year? It’s not the United States - it’s Canada! Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers who brought donuts and helped make this event extra special for our students and families.

MEET THE TEACHER

Quintin Terrell

We're thrilled to welcome Quintin Terrell, aka "Coach Q" to the AJC Family! Coach Q strikes just the right chord as our P.E. and Middle School Music Teacher! As a former college cheerleader, he also coaches our Middle School Cheerleading Team. With his bright smile, easy laugh, and calming presence, it seems like Coach Q has been a part of the AJC Family forever. A fantastic cook, he's known for his delicious mac and cheese and pound cake, which he made for our annual Fish Fry!

Below Coach Q shares what he believes are the greatest challenges our students face, how he juggles his many roles (including dad to a 7th grade Lion!), and who inspired him to become a teacher.

What are the greatest challenges you believe our students face? I believe that our students' greatest challenges are their environment and themselves. If we can get them to see beyond what is right in front of them, the sky's the limit.

How do you juggle being a P.E. Teacher, Music Teacher, and Cheerleading Coach? Prayer, patience, help, and one thing at a time! The kids make it easier because they enjoy the activities I put together for class. I also have a great Assistant Cheerleading Coach in 6th Grade Teacher, Ms. Mines. I recharge by chilling at home with my family and watching or going to games on the weekends to unwind!

Who inspired you to become a teacher? My inspiration to become a teacher came from the teachers that taught me. I had the fortunate pleasure of having many male teachers between elementary and high school. Having those male figures around helped shape and mold me into the person I am today.

THANK YOU to all who have donated

in support of our new Middle School Music Program!

Grad Spotlight

Ah'rea Jones

Congratulations to Ah'rea Jones, AJC Class of 2013!

Ah'rea is a graduate of Collegiate School and James Madison University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. She is currently completing her Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Murphy Deeming College of Health Sciences.

She recently shared, "In July, I received my White Coat, symbolizing the completion of my academic coursework and my transition into full-time clinical practice. I am finishing my third clinical rotation in an outpatient orthopedic and women's health setting."

Ah'rea is most proud of "being a firsthand witness to achieving everything I set out to accomplish, fulfilling the goals I’ve committed to along the way. Long story short, becoming a doctor."

We are in awe of Ah'rea's resilience, drive, and hard work, all of which exemplify an AJC mantra , "Success follows success!"

GIRL'S VOLLEYBALL

THAT'S A WRAP!

The AJC Middle School Girls' Volleyball team wrapped up their season last night with an impressive record of 4-2. Throughout the season, the Lady Lions showed incredible growth, teamwork, and determination on the court. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication. Congratulations to the players and coaches for a fantastic season!
