Anna Julia Cooper School, Class of 2024 |
Congratulations to our 8th Grade Graduates! The Collegiate School, Cristo Rey, John Marshall, Maggie Walker Governor's School, Rise Academy, St. Christopher's, St. Catherine's, Steward, and Trinity Episcopal School are among the high schools they'll go on to attend in the Fall. Stepping out of their comfort zone equipped with the tenets of our motto, faith, knowledge, and pride, they are bound for success!
Families gathered to celebrate their accomplishments during our recent Graduation Ceremony. Four students were selected to share the voices of all 8th grade Lions during speeches reflecting on their AJC experiences (several heartfelt excerpts can be found below) and Kha'Mari B. was honored with the Anna Julia Cooper Award for embodying the positivity and tenacity of our namesake. We are so proud of this crew, many of whom joined us as 4th graders. We miss them already and wish them the very best as they begin their new chapter! |

Lower School students were all smiles during our third annual Movin' On Up Ceremony, which brought families, staff, and K-4th grades together to celebrate the accomplishments of our youngest Lions.
A 4th grade violin performance, sing-alongs accompanied by a budding 3rd grade pianist, and lots of student awards made for a joyful event! |

Pursuing your dreams takes persistence and courage, especially when your goals exist in a world that feels so disconnected from your own. AJC graduates must overcome more than their fair share of obstacles to chase theirs.
We are in awe of our students as we reflect on the perseverance it takes to overcome their daily hurdles for the opportunity to change the trajectory of their lives. In a neighborhood where unemployment and gun violence are the norm, these kids carry the collective hope of their families and community. We are extremely proud to share that everyone from AJC's Class of 2020 graduated high school on time and sixty percent will head to college in the Fall — all first in their families to pursue higher education. Several students received full-tuition academic scholarships.
We are incredibly proud of our graduates, who now number over three hundred! A few of these amazing individuals from Cristo Rey High School are highlighted below wearing their new college swag. "Embrace the challenges ahead with confidence and resilience. Our potential is limitless, and I have no doubt that we will achieve great things." -Shealeah C.

She also received an Honorable Mention from the Regional Scholastic Arts and Writing Contest for work submitted earlier this year. Way to go, Demi!

Thanks to a strong partnership with Swim RVA, EVERY K-5th grade student has learned to swim this year!
Swim RVA provides a convenient location and fantastic swimming instructors, while AJC provides transportation to weekly swim lessons as part of our curriculum. Together we're empowering students with the skills to play it safe in the water! |

"I can see the clock!"
Shout out to our friends at Conexus for providing free vision screenings and glasses for students!
Conexus does it all: screening, fitting, repairs, and replacements.
Students recently received new glasses and although some were a little apprehensive to be seen in their new specs, many were amazed when they first saw the world with perfect vision! |

Anna Julia Cooper's life spanned an incredible 105 years from the last days of slavery to the heart of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s.
Her beloved residence of forty years is located in the LeDroit Park neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and is included along the African American Heritage Trail Series.
Each year AJC's 8th grade class travels to D.C. to visit The Anna Julia Hayward Cooper Residence at 201 T. Street with Head of School, Mr. Maruca, to pay homage to our namesake. |
