Lions Basketball
Basketball is BACK at AJC this season! Our Boys' Basketball team (led by coaches Linton Wade, Jonathan Scott, Rashon Wilson, and Danny Anthony) played in a private school league this year hosted by St. Christopher's School. They played against teams from St. Christopher's, Collegiate, and Veritas. Our team ended the season with an undefeated record AND brought home a 1st Place title in the Championship Game!
This season, we also have a Girls' Basketball Team! The team is led by coaches Laurie Shadowen, Casey Bodlak, and Jonathan Scott. This year serves as the foundational season for building a new team that will be ready to play in a league next winter.
Both teams will play against Elijah House Academy in scrimmages this Friday, February 25th (Tomorrow!), beginning at 4:00pm at AJC. Come out to support our teams one last time and see our new gymnasium!

Student Pride Council
This school year, AJC established its first ever middle school student council group called the AJC Pride Council. Christa Benton, Director of Counseling and Student Life, serves as the staff liaison. The council was created as a way for students to further live out our P.R.I.D.E. pledge (I am Prepared, I show Respect, I model Integrity, I have a Dream, I will Excel). Members of the Council serve as representatives of their classes and assist with a wide variety of daily school duties. Along with other tasks, they lead the morning assembly for the Middle School each day, serve as readers during weekly chapel services, assist with tours for visitors when needed, and share ideas and concerns on behalf of the whole student body. This group of students has been such a big help this school year!

Honoring Poppa Bland
On Sunday, February 6th, members of the AJC community gathered in the Lower School for a special dedication ceremony of the cafeteria kitchen in honor of George Bland, Sr. (affectionately known as "Poppa Bland" at AJC). Poppa Bland's family, current staff members, former staff members, and several graduates were in attendance. Poppa Bland served as the school's cook for eight years and was deeply loved by our students, staff, parents, and volunteers. He passed away on December 5, 2020 after a well-fought battle with cancer.
The plaque installed in the Lower School cafeteria reads:
"This kitchen is dedicated to George Bland Sr., the AJC cook from 2011 until 2019. "Poppa Bland," as he was lovingly known by the students and staff at AJC, left a lasting imprint on all those whose lives he touched. Rest in peace, Poppa Bland, and bless all of those who labor in this kitchen."

Gabriel Award Recipient
We are honored to announce that the Gabriel Award for Volunteer of the Year for 2021 was presented to George Kasper. Every year, the Gabriel Award goes to a dedicated volunteer who steps up in remarkable ways to support our students and staff. George faithfully volunteers at AJC twice a week, assisting with duties in the Middle School office and working on small "fixer-upper" projects around campus. He has been an incredible help and blessing to our humble efforts here on 29th Street. Thank you, George!
